The Alleyn's Schools Group is proud to celebrate a landmark achievement for its flagship school, Alleyn's, which has been named Co-educational Independent School of the Year 2025 at the Independent Schools of the Year Awards.
This national recognition comes at a defining moment, as Alleyn’s marks 50 years of co-education — five decades of pioneering an approach that is now integral to the Group. At Alleyn’s, 'Co' means more than mixed classrooms, it is a shared way of learning, leading, and living: not just a structure but a philosophy. Boys and girls learn with and from one another in a culture that values empathy, collaboration and respect. The result is a community that reflects the real world our pupils will go on to shape: diverse, dynamic and deeply connected.
At Alleyn's, 'Co' also means co-participation, with gender parity across the 71% of pupils who represent the school in sport and a 490% increase in girls' sports fixtures since 2017. These are not simply statistics, they're signs of a school where collaboration is the norm, and every pupil finds their place.
'Co' means co-creation, with Alleyn's pupils helping to shape policy and lead change. From assemblies to parent forums and staff training, every voice is heard. That's how co-education becomes culture; something lived, not just arranged.
'Co' means conscience. The Alleyn's ROCCK - Respect, Opportunity, Curiosity, Courage and Kindness - guide everything from pastoral care to pedagogy. At Alleyn's education isn't just for results, it is for life. Pupils grow up learning how to collaborate, challenge, and care; essential skills for adulthood in the 21st century.
And 'Co' means contribution. Through a myriad of opportunities to make a difference, Alleyn's pupils learn that their voice matters and that adulthood means action, not just achievement.
Accepting the award, Head of Alleyn's Jane Lunnon said: “There’s an All in Alleyn’s. It’s our astonishing community that makes this school what it is, the phenomenal staff, our extraordinary leadership team, and above all, our tremendous, fun, funny and optimistic young people. They are the reason we are here today, and the hope for tomorrow.”
The award tops an exceptional year for Alleyn's students, who achieved record-breaking results at both GCSE and A Level. The school also ranked in the top 8% of independent schools nationally for value added, reflecting the progress and achievement of every individual, whatever their starting point. Yet our measure of success is wider than numbers. Through our AiQ curriculum, Aspiring Minds programme, the AEQ proactive pastoral care, All In co-curricular offer, and fundamental commitment to co-education, our young people learn skills that will serve them long after they leave the classroom.
